dyeing fabric

It's quite interesting how the ancient peoples colored their fabrics.  The fibers, cellulose and proteins need to have a chemical added to accept the dye.  We call it a pH factor.  The ancients knew all about acidic and acryllics.   Ochre was a red that came from iron.  If you were w/out an iron environment "  you could boil yellow ochre to get red.
