Sinew and gut: although not thought of as true fibes: became the first material used in
thread-making: the process of twisting. Samis (Laplanders) today
still make fine threads from twisted strands of reindeer sinew. We
know twisting of gut for violin strings,
tennis rackets, strings for surgical sutures.
Until synthetic fibers of 20th
century: manufacture of catgut was a huge industry: And, what is
catgut:
Dried and twisted intestines of
sheep: occasionally horse or ass. Catgut forms
the bands in lathes, clocks and precision instruments. (thank goodness not cats)
